In laser resurfacing, we use laser light to selectively remove sun-damaged and wrinkled skin. The same procedure may also be used to correct facial acne scarring. Ultimately, after the healing process is complete, new and healthy skin appears that is tighter and smoother. Currently, two lasers are being used. One is the carbon dioxide laser, with a wavelength of 10,600 nm. The second is erbium:YAG with a wavelength of 2940 nm. Dr. Buchen uses both but favors the carbon dioxide laser for resurfacing of severely photodamaged and wrinkled skin. For lesser photodamage, the erbium:YAG is primarily used.
